Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Genetic and environmental causative factors, early detection and intervention, Individualised and Constitutional treatment, Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist, Indications of rare remedies.
This article aims at unfolding the indications of a few uncommon homeopathic medicines in the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which came up repeatedly during the repertorization of their common symptoms from Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC). This article will explore the utility of some of the rare homeopathic remedies in addressing this Disorder in an adept and comprehensive manner so as to showcase the efficacy of Homeopathy as a complementary system of medicine.
ASD is a wide range of conditions characterized by challenges with social interaction and communication skills. The child afflicted with this disorder is obsessed with repetitive behavior and has restricted interests. The chief causative factors of this disorder are genetic and environmental issues.  The onset of this disorder usually occurs in the age group of children between 1 and 3 years, during which it comes to the notice of their parents. Though developmental milestones are generally normal during the early stage, they may gradually get delayed later on.
Globally, it has been found that the incidence of Autism is predicted to affect 24.8 million people in the current generation. In developing countries, about 1.5 % of children are diagnosed with ASD as of 2017.  The prevalence of this Disorder in male children is 4 to 5 times more than that of female children.
ASD is diagnosed based on observation of the child’s behavior. Though the paediatrician does the basic screening investigations, ASD specialists confirm the diagnosis and the severity of the disorder is detected by advanced diagnostic instruments. This helps in catering their substantial needs and educational requirements. One among them is ATEC scores developed by Autism Research Institute. (1)
Though the disorder is confirmed by the Specialists in the field, parents have difficulty in accepting this medical opinion as this disorder is considered as a stigma. If the ailment is diagnosed at the initial stage itself, the gradual progress of the disorder can be arrested with early interventional behavioural and speech therapies along with Homoeopathic treatment with the help of indicated remedies. Though there are many well-proven, polychrest Homoeopathic remedies indicated in treating ASD, a few rare remedies also come to our rescue when specific troublesome symptoms are to be tackled or when explicitly indicated.
Our team took efforts in repertorizing the common symptoms of ASD from ATEC as part of our project on determining effectiveness of Homoeopathic intervention along with other modules  and selected ten uncommon remedies which hold high efficacy in treating the same; clinically. Our aim is to turn floodlights on possible rare remedies which are useful in treating Autism\\\\ASD which is having varied combinations of objective symptoms and basically considered difficult to treat cases.

About ATEC scores: A major obstacle in autism research has been the lack of a valid means of measuring the effectiveness of various treatments. Lacking such a scale, researchers have resorted to using scales such as the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale (GARS), or the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), all of which were designed to diagnose autism- to tell whether or not a child is autistic--and not to measure treatment effectiveness. The Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) was developed by Bernard Rimland and Stephen M. Edelson of the Autism Research Institute, to fill this need.

The intricate cases of Autism/ASD which are treated by the pioneers of Homeopathy as well as Homoeopaths in general without being categorized till now; finds a place of renaissance within the scope of this system with many renowned Homoeopaths handling such cases in an admirable manner.
By combating the challenges faced so far and exploring many possibilities for successfully treating the same by harnessing the medical treasure from the core tenets of Homoeopathic medical science many eminent Homoeopaths are doing a great service, individually. IHRC (Indian Homoeopathic Research Centre) is positioning towards bringing consensus about the same and to involve more and more upcoming Homoeopaths.
